I’ve been making and selling plank basket kits at shows, and love the versatility of the plank basket.

It really does allow you to make any shaped basket, and skips the challenge of making the base. This is one of the hardest parts of basket making, hence why its great for kits.

This time though I wanted to go further. I wanted to create a basket with segments in it for my parents to use to store and sort their vegetable seeds in. The seeds get sorted in a range of ways, mostly around, where and when to plant. Sorting them is always a long process involving the entire dining room table and a fair amount of wine.

I really liked this project as it gave and a range of problems to solve. One of the more complicated challenges was how to fix the willow to the base of the basket, given that all the common practices are with loops rather than straight lines of willow.

I also had similar problem solving to do when I got to the border of the inner section of my basket. However, I am pretty happy with how both of them turned out. My plan is to put wooden doorknobs on the base as feet, as the centre of the basket in the middle is quite deep.
