Unlock the freedom of confident navigation with our one-day Walking Navigation Course. Starting from the basics our course will teach you the tools to become a confident navigator. This course equips you with essential skills to navigate across open terrain, empowering you to explore remote areas and venture off the beaten path safely and confidently. You’ll leave excited to plan your next trip, and equipped with the skills to do so safely.
Timings: 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
Location: South London Downs National Nature Reserve. We will be based out of Farthing Downs, Coulson.
Requirements: A basic level of general fitness and the ability to be on your feet all day.
Age: 18+ (Special teen-friendly date! On 14th August, 14+ are welcome if accompanied by an adult)

During the course, you’ll learn how to:
- Use number of navigation tools and techniques, which can be used even in challenging conditions like fog and darkness.
- Plan routes effectively, including measuring distances and estimating timings.
- Interpret weather forecasts to ensure your walks are enjoyable and safe.
The course is taught by Lizzy Maskey, a qualified Summer Mountain Leader with over a decade of experience teaching navigation across the UK—from Skye to the South Downs. Our training takes place in the scenicSouth London Downs National Nature Reserve, offering an accessible and inspiring setting to hone your skills. Whether you’re planning a Boxing Day pub walk or tackling the Cairngorm Plateau in summer, these skills will serve you well.
