Make your own beautiful coil basket using larch twigs and copper wire. This short video will show you all you need to know.
Coil basketry is an age old practice. You can use a huge range of different materials, from grasses, and sedges to leaves, twigs and sticks. You can bind the baskets with any flexible materials. Otzi the Ice Man, a 5000 year old mummy found in the Italian Alps, had a woven grass article on him. The academics are still debating exactly what this might have been used for, a cloak or a roll mat.
If this coil basket video has piqued your interested in basketry we run a range of basket weaving courses. Where you will be guided though the steps to make your very own stake and stand willow basket, or on our progressive course, you’ll learn stake and stand, handled baskets, coil baskets and platters.
