Cardamine hirsute
- A member of the mustard family.
- Smells like cress, (when the leaves are bruised) and tastes like a punchy rocket, makes a good fiery addition to a plain iceberg salad.
- A fairly small plant often growing between 5-15cm across, grows in a flat rosette, has a small white flower, with four petals, the small sticks of seed pods explode their seeds, causing gardeners to dislike this hardy little plant.
- Is a good winter option as it can overwinter and new growth is often out at the very early stages of spring, although it can usually be found all year round.
- Grows in damp shady areas and at the bases or sides (especially the north facing) of fences, walls and hedges.
